A washed Brazil in the style we’ve been trying to score for some time – Santa Inés out
of Carmo de Minas. This is a single-estate, no-bullshit coffee. Almost all the Brazilian coffees we’ve tasted over the years have been a drag. They’re too often soft, flabby, mealy numbers lacking a coherent, compelling voice, without a discernible structure beyond blah. This is not one of those. It’s clear and compact yet rich with suggestion, tasting broadly of creamy milk chocolate and Nutter Butter, sort of like one of those Justin’s milk chocolate peanut butter cups. So there’s the lucid expression of ultra chill Brazil, Carmo terroir – smooth, casual and pleasant as a bossa nova groove - and then there’s all the drifty, shimmery, evocative overtones - white grape tartaric acids, bright notes of mandarin orange, sweetness of fresh strawberry and suggestions of stone fruits. These voices roll out in fugue, returning in new keys, repeating their catchy phrases with fresh feel, and the cup just keeps doing that all the way through.
